In this blog we answer some common questions about dentures, so you can begin to understand why you might consider them as a restorative option for your smile.
What are dentures?
Dentures are fully removable prosthetic appliances supported by implants that are made specifically to replace missing teeth that are custom made to each patient to closely resemble your natural teeth in both appearance and function.
Why would one consider dentures?
If you are missing teeth or need to have them extracted for any reason, you might consider complete or partial dentures to replace them and fill any gaps you feel self-conscious about. Dentures may also be recommended in some cases when patients want to preserve their smile and facial structure, improve chewing, speech, or digestion.
What is the difference between complete and partial dentures?
Complete dentures are used when a patient is replacing all of their teeth, while partial dentures are used when only some teeth are missing.
Who is eligible for dentures?
Dentures are appropriate for all ages. Anyone who is missing teeth or needing to replace teeth could be eligible for dentures.
Why is it dangerous to leave missing teeth?
Missing teeth can lead to many other health conditions, such as acid reflux and poor digestion and nutrition. Leaving gaps unfilled can also result in shrinking jaw bone structure which can change the face or alter speech patterns.
How are dentures made?
When we make dentures, we make an impression based on your mouth. This tray is used to make a negative rubber mold that we will use to fabricate your dentures using acrylic and also metal in the case of most partial dentures. You will then need to visit our office to try them so that we can make any slight adjustments to ensure they fit just right for optimal function and comfort.
How many implants will I need to support my dentures?
Each case is unique. Depending on whether you need full or partial dentures, whether they are for the upper or lower arches, and how strong your jawbone is will determine the number and placement of implants required to support your dentures. Read here for more about dental implants.
What challenges can I expect after getting my new dentures?
As you adjust to your new dentures, you may experience some difficulty chewing and speaking but this will subside as your muscles and oral tissues get used to and accommodate the new dentures. You may also have to adjust your diet and eating habits.
Will I still need dental cleanings and exams after I get dentures?
Yes! Whether you have partial or complete dentures, you should still visit your dentist regularly for cleanings and oral health exams regularly. During these appointments, we will ensure that your dentures are fitting and functioning properly, provide guidance on keeping them clean to prolong their life, and to care for your existing teeth.
